Preliminary Exercise - Interviews

Documentary Interview

1) State the topic you have chosen for your TV documentary.
The topic I have chosen is "Unrealistic Beauty Standards".

2) Choose at least three TV documentaries similar to your concept and watch a clip or more from each. Make bullet-point notes on everything you watch, commenting on camerawork, editing, sound and mise-en-scene.
. Straight / Curve
. The Illusionists
. Miss Representation

3) Plan your interview: name of person being interviewed, filming location etc.
I am planning to interview young women and ask them questions about how they feel about the way women are represented in the media. I will interview them i a small confined room because I think it adds to the seriousness of the topic.

4) Write a list of questions to ask your interviewee.
Are you generally happy with your own body image and if not do you think it stems from something specifically?
. How many hours per day do you spend on Instagram and if you don’t use Instagram what social media site do you use?
Has using social media affected your views on body image, or your personal body, in any way?
. Do you sometimes edit parts of your body before posting pictures to social media?
. Do you think social media creates a standard for women’s body, or beauty, that is almost unattainable?

5) Write a script for your TV documentary.

6) Write a shot list containing EVERY shot you plan to film AND additional shots to create flexibility when editing.
I am aiming to use a range of shots. For the interview, I am gonna film shots of the interviewee scrolling through her phone. When interviewing I will use medium shots.

7) Plan your mise-en-scene: what iconography are you including to ensure your audience understands your topic and gets to know your interviewee? Plan your interview location, costume, make-up, props, lighting and setting.
For mise-en-scene, I plan to have a school background in the interview because it allows the audience to understand that the topic effects all ages, especially teenagers. The costume would be school uniform with quite bright lighting.

8) Plan a shooting schedule that will ensure everything is filmed by the deadline. Include when, where, who is required, planned equipment and any other aspects you need to arrange.

I plan to film on the . 5th Nov
                                   . 6th Nov
                                   . 12th Nov
